Mr Gas Fires FAQ

What sort of Gas Fire can I have?

This will depend on whether you have a chimney and if so, what type of chimney or flue you have! There are various options from full depth fires for full size chimneys to Slimline fires for Class 2 and Precast flues and Balanced Flue fires where there is no flue at all….. and failing all of those there is Electric!

There is always a solution and if you are not sure what you can have, please get in touch!

How do I get a quote for a new Fireplace and/or Gas Fire?

The best thing to do if you can is to email me some clear photos of your existing Fire/Fireplace (if you have one), a photo of your chimney from outside (again, if you have one) and any other information you think is relevant along with details of what you are looking for. Include your contact details along with what area you are in and I will get back to you as soon as I can to discuss your requirements in depth. Once I know what products you are interested in I can then put a package together for you and supply you with a quotation, subject to survey.

Alternatively, feel free to pick up the phone and call me on 01869 277162 if you have any general questions and I’ll try my best to help.

How do I place an order for a new Fireplace or Gas Fire?

When you have accepted your quotation you will be sent an order, usually by email requesting a 40% deposit payment. When this has been received your order will be processed and your outstanding balance will be payable on the day of delivery/installation.

What is a Site Survey? Do I need one?

There are many different scenarios which can affect the types of Gas Fire or Fireplace that are suitable for your home and the way in which they need to be installed. Basically, a Site Survey would involve checking measurements, a visual check of any flue or chimney, the gas supply, structural integrity of any fireplace and anything else relevant that needs to be checked prior to an order being taken for installation.

Are Surveys free?

Initial consultations and estimates are free of charge, including a home visit if required depending on your location and availability. Sometimes it is necessary to remove a gas fire or part of a fireplace or carry out tests on a chimney in order to be able to offer a firm quotation and in these instances it may be necessary to make a small charge to cover labour costs which may be partly refundable on placing an order. This is assessed on a job by job basis, please ask for details.

Why should I buy my new Fireplace or Gas Fire from you when I’ve seen a cheaper one online?

The internet is great for many things but buying something that needs to be professionally installed by a qualified person (ie, a Gas Appliance) is not always one of them. It is true to say that very often small businesses struggle to compete directly on price for new products with the online suppliers. These suppliers buy in bulk and work on very small profit margins and use a ‘stack ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap’ philosophy. They won’t offer you specialist advice or an individual service, they usually won’t install it for you and if there’s a problem you will have to jump on the conveyor belt as they won’t come rushing out to your house to put things right. If you buy the complete package from a local business such as Mr Gas Fires you eliminate the online risks by knowing that you have bought the correct products and that if for any reason there is a problem it will be taken care of by a single point of contact. In many cases, by the time your package has been put together there probably won’t be much if any difference in the total cost. It all comes down to peace of mind and I would only suggest buying online if you are prepared to work a little ‘outside the box’ if necessary or if you are confident you know exactly what you are buying.

Are you insured and accredited to carry out work in my home?

Yes, Mr Gas Fires is Gas Safe Registered, registration number 147232 and carries full Public Liability Insurance for £2,000,000.

How long will it take to process my order?

This is dependent on the nature of the products ordered and the time of year. As a general rule, most installations are carried out within 2-3 weeks of order date. This can be quicker in the warmer months and a bit longer in the colder months, especially the run up to Christmas.

Is it a messy job?

Chimneys are dirty and Fireplace removal can be very dusty….! I carry sufficient dust sheets to cover the floor in my working area and an average hallway for walking in and out during the job. It is advised that you move or remove all furniture, TV’s, Hi Fi, ornaments etc from the immediate area surrounding your fireplace and cover anything else in the room with clean dust sheets. It is also advised that any curtains, pale carpets or polished floors are suitably protected prior to installation. I try my best to work as cleanly as possible but it is requested that customers take a duty of care for their possessions and furnishings. Please ask if you are unsure, I am always happy to help move anything heavy on the day if required.
